For more than three decades, Swedish rap-metal pioneers Clawfinger have been a commanding force in European rock. They are clearly unafraid to blend biting political lyrics with explosive, groove-driven aggression. At the heart of that thunder lies bassist Andre Skaug, whose energetic, hard-hitting style has not only fueled Clawfinger’s sound but also defined his place among Europe’s most respected players.

Beyond Clawfinger, Skaug’s versatile musicianship has made him a sought-after collaborator, having worked with acts like PAIN, Hypocrisy, and E-Type, continually pushing the boundaries of heavy music.

But for Skaug, one constant in his ever-evolving musical life has been his instrument of choice, the Arona 4 bass.

Finding “The One”

Andre’s relationship with Cort began in 2014, when he introduced the Arona 4 in a video interview that captured his immediate connection with the instrument.

“The absolute first impression was how the neck felt while playing,” Andre recalls. “Then I realized how light it was compared to many other brands, and of course, the collaboration with Sandberg made it even more appealing.”

Designed in partnership with German bass specialists Sandberg, the Arona 4 quickly proved to be more than just another addition to Andre’s arsenal. It became his go-to bass. It’s a perfect match for the high-energy, physically demanding shows that Clawfinger is known for.

“It’s very light, and that’s a huge bonus when it comes to playing live,” he says. “Even my guitar tech appreciates it—especially when I throw it across the stage! I like the way it sounds and looks.”

Why Change a Winning Concept?

Although the Arona 4 has since been discontinued, Andre is still fiercely loyal to it.

“Why change a winning concept?” he says. “As long as they do what they’re supposed to, I don’t see any reason not to keep using them.”

That practicality reflects his entire approach to gear and performance. “Everything should be easy with an instrument. It shouldn’t be hard to play,” he emphasizes. His preference for B or A tuning and heavy-gauge strings (.070–.135) underscores his aggressive yet controlled tone, one that’s both punishing and precise.

Going Viral, Accidentally

Recently, a viral Instagram reel featuring Andre and his beloved Arona 4 introduced millions of viewers to his unfiltered stage energy.

“I had no idea it would go viral,” Andre admits with a laugh. “It’s probably our photographer’s fault. We happen to have a really clever and talented guy (Peter Bjöns) with us all the time, and he made this reel with his 360 camera. His creative editing makes you feel as if you’re right there on stage with me.”

The clip’s raw, immersive energy perfectly captures what makes Andre’s performances and his connection to his instrument so special.

Legacy and Evolution

While the Arona 4 may no longer be in production, its DNA lives on in Cort’s modern bass lineup. Instruments like the A4 Ultra Ash and B4 Element carry forward the same spirit of innovation, playability, and tone that have earned Andre’s trust for more than a decade.

For him, reliability and feel come before all else. Whether in the studio or under blinding stage lights, the Arona 4 has never let him down and that’s something he doesn’t take lightly.

The Next Chapter

Clawfinger’s legacy continues to grow, with new music breathing fresh fire into their unmistakable sound. “We just released two new songs, ‘Scum’ and ‘Ball and Chain,’ and we will release a new album on February 20 named Before We All Die,” Andre shares. “That will actually be the first album in 18 years.”

Between band commitments, Andre has also been writing his own material. “I have actually been writing some songs by myself since the pandemic, so you never know if there will be a solo album sometime in the future,” he says. “Otherwise, I support my son’s metal debut with his project Prevailed, and I’m trying to advise him and help him out with whatever comes up.”

After 30 years, countless stages, and a career that continues to evolve, one thing is certain: Andre Skaug’s passion for music and for his Cort basses remains as unstoppable as ever.

Because for a player who’s built his life on energy, precision, and authenticity, there’s simply no reason to change a winning concept.
